To practice as an Architect in the United Kingdom you need to be registered with the Architects Registration Board. To qualify to study a degree in Architecture, you need 5 GCSEs (A-C) including maths, English, Physics or Chemistry, plus 3 A-levels. You may need to show a portfolio of art. To qualify as an Architect usually takes 7 years, starting with study at a recognised university, completing either a BA., BSc, or B.Arch, which then exempts the candidate from RIBA Part 1.
After this a minimum of 1 year working in practice followed by a post-graduate course that could be a Dip. Arch, Masters (M.Arch) or B(Arch) exempts the candidate from RIBA Part 2. Finally you will required to complete a further year of working in a practice and then you will need to sit the RIBA Part 3 examination in Professional Practice and Management. Once you have completed each stage you can join both RIBA as a Chartered Architect and the UK Register of Architects, meaning you can work independently as an Architect.
