The word Architect stems from the Greek ‘arkhitekton’ which translates to ‘chief-builder’. The Architect has been in existence since the earliest humans started to construct permanent dwellings and stopped migration and living as hunter-gatherers.
In the earliest civilisations Architects already had some understanding of building and construction methods, some of which, like those used to build the pyramids at Giza, have been lost to even modern Architects! Architecture is one of the oldest professions of mankind, and as such its history is somewhat unclear.
What is clear is that the Architect has been one of the cornerstones of modern civilisation and has been revered as such for centuries. Architecture and Architects have played a key role in holding societies together. The huge cathedrals in Europe underline the importance of the church in the middle ages as much as the pyramids underlined the importance of the Pharaoh. Modern Architects must consider form, function, environment and aesthetic appearance of any new design.
