As a Building Surveyor you would work in many areas of property and construction. As such you would advise on the design and construction of new or existing buildings. You could also be involved in the maintenance and repair of these buildings.
Projects will range from the design of large, multimillion-pound structures to small changes or repairs, and may at times include working with buildings of architectural or historic importance.
Your Functions May include
Building Surveying is a diverse profession and there are many functions that may fall within your job role. One of your functions will involve carrying out feasibility studies to estimate materials, time and labour costs. It will be your responsibility to ensure that projects are completed on budget and on time.
Your tasks will also include preparing tender documentation and either advising or appointing Contractors. You will also deal with planning applications and advise clients on property legislation and building regulations. You may also be asked to perform Insurance assessments and claims.
Based on your expertise you will be able to determine the condition of existing buildings and make proposals for repair and maintenance. You could also advise on the health and safety aspects of buildings.
In new construction projects you may be required to ensure that the buildings meet the needs of people with disabilities. You will be required to advise on energy efficiency, environmental impact and sustainable construction.
You would use computer software packages to carry out some of these tasks, and to keep records, prepare work schedules and write reports.
