Facilities Manager Job Description

Facilities Managers ensure that a business has the most suitable working environment  which are in line with its requirements.

As organisations differ, so do the duties of the Facilities Managers, who generally work to a framework of best business practice to ensure operational efficiency and health & safety. You could work as a Facilities Manager in either the public or private sector and could have another job title such as Business Services Manager, Support Services Manager or Contracts Manager.

Working hours are generally nine to five, though longer hours may be required on occasion to meet project deadlines. Some facilities management roles may require shift work in order to cover 24-hour operations.

Your Functions May include


Facilities Managers are employed in most sectors and industries especially where manufacturing or processing occurs or where large numbers of people are involved. The diversity of the work is enormous and requires people with diverse skill sets.

Typical tasks may include:

  • manage and oversee (or working with department heads to ensure smooth operations) of essential central services such as reception, security, maintenance, mail, archiving, cleaning, catering, waste disposal and recycling 
  • utilise space and company resources fensuring optimal efficiency
  • project management and supervising coordinating the work of contractors
  • calculating and comparing costs for required goods or services to achieve maximum ROI
  • planning for future development in line with strategic business objectives
  • managing and leading change to ensure minimum disruption to core activities
  • coordinating and leading a team to acheive company objectives
  • responding appropriately to emergencies or urgent issues
