A Vehicle Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of cars, motorcycles, trucks and other vehicles that use the road including taxis and buses. They may report to a Head Mechanic in a workshop, as part of a workshop team or work independently.
After basic training a Vehicle Technician may specialise in different areas such as HGV vehicles, or a specific make of vehicle but in each case diagnosis, cost estimates and repairs would need to be facilitated.
Due to vehicle manufacturers making greater use of electronics to monitor and control cars these days, a Vehicle Technician, must be well versed in both mechanical and computer-aided technology to work on brakes, cooling systems, steering, gearing and the vehicle’s suspension.
Your Functions May include
As a Vehicle Technician you would need to be able to work well with your hands as well as be able to communicate with your peers and customers. Your work could include diagnosing, solving and fixing problems such as the brake system, servicing vehicles and maximising the vehicle’s performance. Part of this could include replacing faulty parts, tuning the car settings or using sophisticated testing equipment to diagnose faults.
