‘Big build’ employs over 7000

SUBMITTED DATE: 01/11/09

The latest Olympic Park and Village employment figures have been published by the ODA.

According to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)'s ‘Jobs, Skills, Futures’ update, 4,842 people are currently employed by contractors at the Olympic Park construction site.

The additional 2,428 workers at the Olympic Village take the total number of construction jobs and other roles created by the ‘big build’ up to 7,270.

Chairman of the ODA John Armitt said the authority was making good progress on its strategy to boost the jobs and skills legacy of the 2012 London Games.

“The ‘big build’ of the Olympic Park and Village is on track and providing vital employment, training and business opportunities in London and across the UK.

“Our steady progress on regenerating this part of east London is testament to the workforce on site and hard work of thousands across the UK whether they are fabricating steel in Wales for the Aquatics Centre or growing wetland plants in Norfolk for the parklands,” he said.

The ‘Job, Skills, Futures’ targets include delivering a construction workforce of at least 15% of residents of the five Host Boroughs.

Currently, more than one in five members (21%) of the construction workforce are resident in the five Host Boroughs and over half (55%) live in London.
