Boost in London jobs with high-speed rail

SUBMITTED DATE: 12/09/09

The high-speed rail (HSR) planned from London to Scotland will increase London jobs, connect British cities outside the south east and combat carbon emissions.

The £34bn project is being backed by multiple cities in England and will cut journey times substantially, the BBC News reported.

A trip from London to Manchester can reportedly be shortened by an hour and 13 minutes with a high-speed rail in place.

The UK’s railway infrastructure isn’t currently reflecting the growing economy and needs to be improved.

Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese, told the news provider: “We cannot continue to grow the UK's economy and compete on a global stage without a high-speed rail network in the UK.

“There are 3,480 miles of high speed railway lines in mainland Europe with a further 2,160 miles under construction and 5,280 miles planned for the future.

“In Britain, despite inventing the world's first passenger railway we only have 68 miles (the Channel Tunnel High Speed One link) in operation.”

The project will be extremely beneficial to the economy and therefore the government has set up an organisation, High Speed Two, which will study the likelihood of a north-south high-speed line.

The possibilities of a high-speed rail between London and Scotland will do more than create manifold UK jobs.

A high-speed rail will be able to carry a capacity of 15,000 per hour between London and other main cities and double the amount if the trains are double-decker like the trains in Europe.

These statistics will easily save Britain around 30 million tonnes of CO2 within a 60-year time frame.

Theresa Villiers, shadow transport secretary commented to the BBC News: “The Conservatives have long been aware that the argument for HSR goes beyond faster journey times to London, and covers a transport revolution focused on connecting some of our great British cities outside the south east."
