Hampshire jobs safe at Portsmouth hospital

SUBMITTED DATE: 16/03/10

Hampshire jobs at a Portsmouth hospital is safe after NHS bosses revealed that no more cuts will be made.

Recently the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust had to make some cost cuts at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

Most of the 67 posts that were identified for redundancy were focussed on administrative and corporate roles.

Although the NHS said there won’t be any more job cuts, some are sceptical because the trust’s £12m debt seems too large.

Jock McLees, of Portsmouth's Local Involvement Network, a local patient group, told the Portsmouth Advertiser: “I'm a bit sceptical that this will do the trick.

“Considering the deficit they are facing, I was expecting more redundancies to be honest to make the savings necessary.

“I think we need to keep an eye on what's happening.”

According to the news provider, Professor David Rhind, chairman of the hospital trust, vowed that the redundancies were “a rare necessity and there are currently no plans for anymore redundancies.”

In the meanwhile the trust has launched a text message service to ensure patients don’t miss their appointments, which leads to the trust loosing money.

A text messages will be sent to patients’ phones five days prior to their appointment.
