Insolvency specialists are still in demand

SUBMITTED DATE: 24/09/09

As the demand for business recovery experts remains high, the insolvency field is still a growing area of opportunity for those seeking jobs in accountancy

While some industry experts are concerned that the expansion of this sector will slow down once the economy turns a corner, others say that growth in this sector is only just beginning.
“The rise in individual insolvencies and the continued high level of corporate insolvencies is the tip of the iceberg of distress being felt by many UK companies and individuals,” Liz Bingham, UK head of restructuring at Ernst & Young, told Accountancy Age.
The insolvency industry is also gaining from the growing number of foreign nationals who are travelling to the UK as ‘insolvency tourists’.
These individuals choose to file for bankruptcy under English law because the procedure lasts 12 months instead of up to nine years, which is as long as it can take in Europe.
Marcus Kray, of Insolventz Agentur, which employs German-speaking lawyers, translators and tax advisers specialising in insolvency, told the Press Association that the number of foreign debtors seeking bankruptcy in the UK has risen by 20% since the start of the recession.
"The situation in Germany is very difficult. Say you are 60 and you want to be debt-free by the time you are retired when you are 65, you just can't do it. It's impossible.
"It's not just Germany - in Ireland it takes 12 years. But in the UK it takes 12 months, although it is still not easy here,” he added.
The industry should be seeing an influx of specialists in this area, as a record number of people (300) sat the most recent Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency exam, which represents a 6% increase on last year. The pass rate was 73%, reports Accountancy Age.
