More London jobs with Mayor’s Olympic Kingston “joke”

SUBMITTED DATE: 13/11/09

London jobs in Kingston can get a welcoming boost if the community centre in Old Malden is used as a ping-pong venue during the Olympic Games.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson recently opened the newly refurbished Shira Mirza Trust Manor Park Hall in Old Malden and jokingly suggested the centre as a possible venue, the Surrey Comet reported.

“Given the huge pressure on budgets in the run up to 2012, I think that if things really get tough, this might be the perfect venue for the Olympic ping-pong championships,” the Mayor said.

According to the news source, the Mayor also praised Councillor Shiraz Mirza, who worked extremely hard to see that the community centre gets a revamp.

“Here we have a man who has stepped up to the plate by his own initiative, enterprise and vision and has, I think, created one of the most beautifully refurbished halls in the whole of this part of London,” the Mayor said.

The Shira Mirza Trust has participated in a couple of other projects, updating areas around Kingston and creating jobs in the process.

Their first project involved the refurbishment of the YMCA hall where they transformed the centre into a venue for business and social activities.

The venture was so successful, the trust made enough money to pay for the Manor Park Hall.

If the Mayor’s joke turns into a reality, Kingston will be ready to host an Olympic event.
