German car giant BMW has given a timely boost to
automotive jobs by deciding to start production of two new models at its Oxfordshire base, which could create new opportunities for UK jobseekers.
The new Minis will be rolled out at the Frankfurt motor show which is being held on September 15th and production of the vehicles will take place at the Cowley plant that currently produces three versions of the car.
Business secretary Lord Mandelson said: "The production of two new Minis is very good news for Oxford, and for the UK car industry. It is a demonstration of BMW's long-term commitment to the UK as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year."
He added that British drivers have had a long love affair with the Mini and he believes the relationship will continue for many years to come.
Automotive jobs were recently bolstered when Japanese car maker Nissan decided to produce an electric vehicle from its Sunderland site.
