FEATURED JOBS

New power station for Pembroke

SUBMITTED DATE: 22/07/09

A new power station being built at Pembroke will bring thousands of construction jobs to Wales, and MP Nick Ainger is keen to keep the jobs local.

The new plant is set to become the UK’s biggest gas fired power station and Mr Ainger believes that up to 2000 construction jobs will be created.

West Wales firm Dawnus has begun work on the site and Mr Ainger wants other local construction companies to become involved in the project before construction companies from abroad.

“We need to encourage Welsh and UK contractors to bid for work," he said, "in order to maximise the number of jobs for local and UK workers," Mr Ainger told WalesOnline.

The problem is, according to Mr Ainger, that in the past UK firms have failed to win the tender, which meant that foreign companies were able to step into the breach. There is a need for UK companies to improve their bid attempts.

"When UK contractors win contracts they employ UK workers. They only recruit continental labour when no UK workers are available.

“The problems on other sites have stemmed from UK firms failing to win tenders and continental companies taking on the work and bringing in their own labour. We can avoid that at Pembroke if UK contractors make serious bids.”

“Dawnus, a west Wales firm, employing local labour has shown the way. Other UK firms should follow their lead. That way we will get the maximum local benefit out of this £1 billion project.”
