Southend could get new jobs

SUBMITTED DATE: 08/07/09
Around 200 call centre jobs could be created in Southend as two companies are considering moving to the seaside town, according to one newspaper.

The Southend Standard said that senior figures from Southend Council are in talks with the organisations, who want to set up communication centres in the town.

"If businesses set up here, then it might attract more to follow. It would certainly be welcome news if these firms do set up here, especially in a time when jobs are hard to come by," John Clayton, chief executive of Essex Chamber of Commerce, told the newspaper.

There were similar supporting statements from Anita Thornberry, head of regeneration and tourism at the council, who said they had been working with the companies, whose details are not yet known, to help them find office space.

The Mirror recently said that call centre jobs are flourishing in the downturn as more companies are investing in better customer service teams to retain business.
