Top tips to land a sales and marketing job in the London printing sector

SUBMITTED DATE: 17/11/11

The printing sector is an exciting place to work as it offers tremendous variety.

You would usually be working with a mix of big and small companies, freelancers, students and ordinary consumers – often having an impact on important events in people’s lives (e.g. think wedding invitations or t-shirts to celebrate a special event).

The London printing sector is an especially competitive arena, with outlets on almost every high street offering a wide range of services at attractive prices.

The job of a sales and marketing executive in this context is potentially a challenging one. Not only do you need to market locally to attract the businesses in your area (“the low hanging fruit” so to speak) but you’ll also need to develop tools to reach potential new clients online. Printing companies can use Twitter or Facebook for example to offer quotes, advice, support and tips as well as special promotions.

Some print businesses like The London Printing Company (with shops in Earl’s Court and Notting Hill) have state-of-the-art equipment in-house which enables them to meet demand for urgent printing jobs at short notice. The challenge of a sales and marketing executive in this context is to make customers aware of these services; and also the fact that it may be worth paying a slight premium for the peace of mind of working with a professional company that takes its deadlines seriously.

Here are some top tips for anyone seeking a sales and marketing job in this sector:

1. Research the company you are applying to and its specific specialisation.  Don’t assume that all printing companies are alike. Research the specific competitive strengths of the one you’re applying to and come up with a business plan to help it succeed.

2. Give concrete examples of your skills and technical ability. It’s no good making bold claims if you don’t have substance behind them. Come to an interview armed with real-world examples of your past successes and be candid about personal development areas. Be specific: if your core experience is in business card printing then be sure to demonstrate your depth of knowledge in this precise field.

3. Show a friendly attitude.  Working in a sales-oriented role requires you to build good relationships. Even though you may need a sales focus it helps to be a friendly person too whom potential clients will warm to. Demonstrate in your manner that you are easy to work with and approachable.
All the best in your job search!
